1000 Islands Travel

Find out why the St. Lawerence 1000 Islands area is where summer magic happens for so many visitors each year.  It is the Disney World of cottage country in Ontario, Canada, that is a perfect vacation destination for so many families.

This video with its aerial perspectives captures all of the fun and excitement of the unique environment created by glaciers millions of years ago.  Beautiful clear water provides a paradise for swimmers, water sports, boating and fishing.  Take a ride on one of the many classic wood boats that sparkle with deep amber colors and a varnish shine.  We have all seen them in a James Bond movie set on a European lake but have you seen them traveling beside a Great Lakes freighter? One of the many experiences that can be captured during a vacation to the Thousand Islands region.

Gananoque is the gateway to the islands and a perfect place to catch a tour boat through the region.  A visit to Boldt Castle is included in many of the tours and a great way for the family to see one of the most interesting homes on one of the many islands.  Designed as a dream home by hotel magnate George C. Boldt for his wife, she passed away before seeing the completed mansion.

The area is shared by both vacationing Canadians and Americans that freely traverse this border region.  While both sides provide places to stay, we would recommend the Canadian side for most visitors.  For those looking for a balance of the 1000 Islands experience and the Great Lakes, Kingston is a city that can also be considered.  Here you can visit Fort Henry and also take cruises up to the islands.

From RiverQuest Videos:  The St. Lawrence 1000 Islands area is one of the most unique areas in the world. Comprised of 1864 islands shared by Canada and the USA, the islands experience 20% of the world's unfrozen fresh water flowing past their shores. This is the river that opened up central North America and was the chosen Summer home for 19th century inventors, entertainers, Presidents and everyday nature lovers.
