Beautiful Civita di Bagnoregio, a medieval village perched high on a hilltop, is a must-see travel destination in central Italy, not too far from Rome, in the Lazio region. Long neglected as residents left this iconic village, it has been saved by tourists and becoming a popular attraction in Italy. There are pages of Instagram photos from travelers that have captured the unique perspective of this village. It is an astounding sight to see this ancient village sitting high atop a rock hill, which is only accessible by a long steep pedestrian bridge. Civita is the name of the hilltop town and Bagnoregio is the nearby town. Only a handful of people live in the village now, which mostly sees tourists these days. The volcanic tufa rock on which the town sits is gradually eroding over time.
Getting to Civita di Bagnoregio
To visit Civita, buses from the nearby town of Orvieto will drop people off in Bagnoregio where they can catch a minibus or walk to the top of the hill, which takes about 15-20 minutes. You can also drive there and park at the bus lot in Bagnoregio or at the base of the bridge walkway. From Rome there are tours that take day trips and you can take a train from Rome to Orvieto and then the bus to Civita di Bagnoregio. Many may think you can do both in a day but that would be challenging unless with a very early start.

Things To Do In The Village
The main sites to see when visiting Civita are the Romanesque Arch built by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago at the entrance of Civita, the remains of the Renaissance Palace, the Piazza with its amazing Etruscan columns, the Church and its impressive bell tower, the Etruscan Caves on the east end of the town, and Maria's garden on the far side of the town with spectacular canyon views from her garden. She'll show visitors the garden for a euro or two.
There are several B&Bs in Civita where you can stay the night and some small restaurants for food and refreshment.
Stunning Photos and Video
The featured tourism video in this article includes stunning aerial drone video and scenes inside this historic village. This location draws tourists and photographers because of some of the beautiful opportunites the village provides to capture Italy is days past. Can you imagine living here hundreds of years ago? Watch the video to get ideas on how you can capture your memories in long wide angle views and then close ups within the village walls. We will be bringing our favorite 4K DSLR Sony a7R II camera and EVO Rage gimbal to capture some of our own amazing video and our other photo gear. If you capture some great video or photos will visiting, share with with #somedaytrips for a possible feature on instagram, twitter or facebook.
