Malta is one of those travel destinations that, for many that don't have access from Europe, registers at the top of the list for places to visit. Our image gallery below from a visit to the island in 2018 provides over 30 amazing reasons why it should be included on your list.
Travel to Malta for a destination that will satisfy your wanderlust for ancient civilizations, intricate architecture and a culture rich with history. Malta, located in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily and north of Africa, is actually an archipelago of three islands. Besides Malta, there is Gozo and Comino, both smaller than the main island but with their own rich and ancient history and epic scenery. It has a long history spanning centuries of colonial occupation, from the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and France to Britain in more recent times.
Your Mediterranean cruise is going to Corfu, so what are the attractions you can see in one day and the history behind this island to make it a travel destination? The Greek island of Corfu, also known by its Greek name of Kerkyra, lures travelers from all over the world to its natural beauty, stunning coastline, pristine beaches with crystalline water, multi-cultural heritage and amazing archaeological sites. It is the greenest and lushest of all the Greek islands. Its pleasant Mediterranean climate, appealing natural landscape and abundant resources, and strategic location between Italy, Greece and Albania in the Ionian Sea made it the target of many conquerers over the past centuries. The Venetians, French and British, to name a few, left their indelible mark on the culture and architecture of this island.
Beautiful Civita di Bagnoregio, a medieval village perched high on a hilltop, is a must-see travel destination in central Italy, not too far from Rome, in the Lazio region of Italy. Long neglected since residents left this iconic village, it has been saved by tourists and becoming a popular attraction in Italy. There are pages of Instagram photos from travelers that have captured the unique perspective of this village. It is an astounding sight to see this ancient village sitting high atop a rock hill, which is only accessible by a long steep pedestrian bridge. The walk to the village via the foot bridge takes about 15 breathtaking - in all definitions of the word - minutes, but it's well worth the views and the trek around this quiant little town with stunning views of the countryside through little alleyways and various points throughout the town.
Civita is actually the name of the hilltop town and Bagnoregio is the nearby town. Only a handful of people live in the village now. The volcanic tufa rock on which the town sits is gradually eroding over time.
To visit Civita, buses from the nearby town of Orvieto drop people off in Bagnoregio where they can catch a minibus or walk to the top of the hill. You can also drive to the town of Bagnoregio and park at the bus lot or at the base of the bridge walkway, which is much closer and more convenient since the walk up the hill to the village isn't for those not in reasonably good shape.
From Rome there are tours that take day trips and you can take a train from Rome to Orvieto and then the bus to Civita di Bagnoregio. Many may think you can do both Orvieto and Bagnoregio in a day but that would be challenging unless you get a very early start.
The main sites to see when visiting Civita are the Romanesque Arch built by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago at the entrance of Civita, the remains of the Renaissance Palace, the Piazza with its amazing Etruscan columns, the Church and its impressive bell tower, the Etruscan Caves on the east end of the town, and Maria's garden on the far side of the town with spectacular canyon views from her garden. She'll show visitors the garden for a euro or two.
There are several B&Bs in Civita where you can stay the night and some small restaurants for food and refreshment.
