Gornergrat Zermatt Matterhorn Tour

Written by

Dreaming of a trip to see the Matterhorn is a top bucket list item for many travelers.  This travel video takes you on a brief tour of the Gornergrat activity at the Matterhorn.  Once you have made your trip by rail to Zermatt there are two ways to experience the Matterhorn.  One is to travel to Gornergrat by Cog railway for a spectacular view of the Matterhorn.  The other is the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise experience which has the option of skiing during the summer.  This video was captured in early June after a late spring snow that limited our planned hiking options.  We can only imagine the view covered completely with snow or fields of grass and wildflowers.

At the summit there is a viewing platform that is open year-round.  Gornergrat has an elevation at 3,089 m (10,134 ft) and is a top destination activity in Switzerland. The Gornergrat Bahn rail systems were the first fully electric cog railways in Switzerland that chug to the top of the summit without delay.  There are several stops on the way up and down the summit.  During the summer months many choose to stop as they descend and then enjoy a hike back to town. This train runs as a modern, sustainably powered train, which recovers and saves energy thanks to its regeneration process which is quite unique.  The cost for a ticket is not cheap at 90 CHF which is discounted 50% with a Swiss Rail Pass. Just one more reason to consider the Swiss Rail Pass option.

There is a restaurant at the top with outdoor and indoor seating for those wishing to relax and enjoy the spectacular view.  However, in the summer months we strongly recommend you pack a light picnic in your backpack and find a spot to enjoy nature and this mighty giant.  Tear off some bread and enjoy some swiss cheese, meats and wine with a finish of a fine Swiss chocolate.

For those interested in some easy mountain climbing the best option is via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift.  From here you can do the famous Breithorn ascent.  The climb to the top at 4100 m is an experience you will never forget.  You will need to have proper equipment to do the climb, some of which can be rented locally.  Getting to the top takes about 3-4 hours.

Many travelers take the trains in from other locations to the town of Zermatt for a daily adventure.  There are many options to stay in Zermatt at the foot of this mighty mountain throughout the year. For the skier the area boasts 54 rail and lifts for a multitude of daily adventure options.  There are also 400 km of hiking trails that lead in and out of the valley. Those that enjoy skiing and food can find many winter hut restaurants on the slopes.
